‘Feeling the pressure’ … retiring Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson

SIR Alex Ferguson quit Man United because of STRESS, fellow footie boss Fabio Capello revealed last night.

Fergie, 71, told former England manager Capello that the relentless demand to win trophies had finally taken its toll on him.

And Sir Alex is set to kick off his retirement by travelling the world with his loyal wife Cathy.

The Man United manager revealed his plan in a phone conversation with Capello.

The Italian said: “He told me he has decided to go now because there is too much stress nowadays.

“Always having to win something is very challenging, and he told me he wanted to go around the world with his wife.”

First stop for Sir Alex as he copies Around The World In 80 Days globetrotter Phileas Fogg is likely to be the South of France, where he usually enjoys an end-of-season break at his £2million vineyard.

He also owns a penthouse in New York, where son Mark lives.

Fergie, 71, and Cathy, 74, are also set to spend more time with their 11 grandchildren.

Sir Alex’s brother Martin said: “He’s a great family man. He dotes on his grandchildren and having more time with them is something he will appreciate.”

Son Darren rejected suggestions his dad was retiring due to ill health, and said he had discussed his decision with the family.

Darren added: “He feels he’s gone at the right time, he’s left the club in a fantastic position.

“The main reason is he’s got a lot of outside things. He’ll be an ambassador — Unicef is a big part of what he wants to do.”

Fergie could also launch a new career as a £70,000-a-time speaker on the world’s lecture circuit.

He was a guest lecturer at America’s Harvard Business School last year, and other institutions are now expected to offer lucrative invites.

Sir Alex will be given a guard of honour by rivals Swansea as he leads his team out at Old Trafford for the final time tomorrow.

Fortune teller Moyes

Shrewd … David Moyes yesterday

EXCLUSIVE By STEPHEN MOYES

MANCHESTER United manager-in-waiting David Moyes set up an investment firm to handle his booming finances — the day BEFORE Sir Alex stepped down.

Kilmardinny Investments Ltd was registered to Moyes on Tuesday — 24 hours before Fergie dropped his bombshell after 27 years with the Red Devils.

The move suggests Everton boss Moyes had anticipated the £33million pound six-year contract he was about to land — and may even have been tipped off by Sir Alex of his exit plan.

A source said: “David is a very shrewd operator and will have set up the company to ensure his money is managed in the best way possible.”

Fergie gets SPOTY ban

SIR Alex has been BANNED from winning the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award.

Punters flooded bookies with bets on the Scot taking the gong following his retirement.

But the BBC said last night: “Non-playing coaches or management staff are not eligible.”

William Hill said it will refund nearly £5,000 it had taken on Fergie winning.

EVERTON nut Rob Wakenshaw, 24, was red-faced after having a giant tattoo of Moyes inked on his arm days before David quit the Blues’ top job after 11 years.
