ROBIN VAN PERSIE scored his first goal for Manchester United in 11 games to inch them ever closer to a 20th league title.

The Dutchman, whose last goal came on February 10, coolly slotted home a second half penalty after Michael Carrick had given Alex Ferguson’s men an early lead at Stoke.

The victory puts United 15 points clear of Manchester City once more, with their rivals involved in this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.

And it means Stoke continue their rotten run in 2013, with only one Premier League win since December and the pressure mounting on boss Tony Pulis.

The Potters chief would have been fuming at his side’s start, with after they uncharacteristically failed to deal with a set piece with four minutes gone.

Van Persie’s corner led to some pinball in the box, before Carrick stabbed the ball home from the edge of the six yard box.

Wayne Rooney, playing in central midfield, then tested Asmir Begovic with a long range effort.

Stoke’s best first-half chance came via a Robert Huth header that flew wide.

But United were in control overall, with a dull end to the opening period briefly lit up when Rooney fired a curling free-kick just wide.

Jon Walters had a chance to draw level early in the second half, but spooned his shot over.

And Van Persie was on hand to double the misery when he fired United into a 2-0 lead.

The Dutchman was brought down in the box by Andy Wilkinson, before dusting himself down and firing low past Begovic for his 20th league goal of the season.

Stoke could not find a way back into the match, and now sit just three points off the relegation zone having played two games more than 18th-placed Wigan.
